Dear Diary, when I woke up I ate breakfast and worked on potholders. While I was doing that Chris came over. We played a couple games then went up to her house. We played more games, and then I went to music lessons. When we came back we had supper. Then we went to the lake. [Brother] and I went swimming then we had a little something to eat, and went to bed.

Yes, it has been a long time. A long, LONG time. How long? Well, that Baby I kept writing about is now 6... and we live in a different state. A lot has happened, but this early diary entry has me focusing on one aspect of my life in particular.
That friend Chris? I remember her well. I remember mostly how we always played school in her basement. What is it with little girls that makes them want to play school and house? I suppose it's our innate desires to become mothers - and many of us also want to be teachers. I did... I mean, I wanted to become a mother and I wanted to become a teacher. I'm proud to say I've now done both.
I have been a mom for 15 years. It is the most rewarding job I could ever have. Most demanding, too. Most tiring... most draining... most exhausting... but by FAR, the most rewarding.
As for teaching, well, I never got a teaching certificate. My college degree is in something much more generic and much less glamorous... let's just leave it at that. But when we moved where we are now, we decided to give homeschooling a try. I was very excited! I eagerly attended the local homeschool conventions, organized all of our curriculum, and enthusiastically sat my boys down at the dining room table and... taught. Well, maybe that's an overstatement. In reality, I sat them down and said... LEARN. Okay, so I taught some here and there. I took them on field trips that we all enjoyed. I read them stories. I had them complete their assignments. I answered their questions. But the majority of their learning came from the curriculum we chose.
We did that for 3 years. It was a challenging 3 years, but we became so close because of it. We vacationed whenever we wanted. We slept in. We had all of our meals together. We laughed, we fought, we got on each others' nerves... but we solidified our relationships with each other and we will all look back on those three years at home with great fondness. (or am I assuming too much?!)
But alas, the time came for our oldest to go to High School - we said that would mark the end of our homeschooling. So now all three are back in public school and I find myself with quite a bit more time on my hands. Hence, I have rediscovered this blog. (Took me a bit longer to find the old diary... had to rummage through the crawlspace to find it, but it couldn't stay hidden from me forever. It's as if it exudes a certain energy that allows me to hone in on its exact location...)
So anyway, since I am officially retired from teaching, I guess I'll go back to playing house. Despite my early childhood practice, I still haven't figured out how to do it right.

Joey
Monday, August 4, 1980
Dear diary, when me and [childhood friend] woke up we watched T.V. Then we ate breakfast and worked on our pot holders again. When we got done with that we took a walk up to the school and played a while. When we got back we looked at my Valentines. We found one that looked like it came from Joey my boyfriend. Then we went to the library and saw some movies. We took [childhood friend] home and we ate supper, watched T.V. got ready for bed and went to bed.

Remember me? Yes, it's been a LONG while since I've written a post on this blog. I wonder how long it will take before anyone notices...? We'll see. I may be writing to myself. And that's just fine. Good therapy.
So I've been pretty particular about keeping the names in my childhood annonymous - up until this time. I actually thought about not sharing Joey's name, but hey, how many Joey's are there in the world? On the other hand, the [childhood friend] I mentioned has a much less common name, so I'll continue to keep her annonymous.
So who was this Joey kid? Well, according to this diary entry, he was my boyfriend. In reality? He was a cute little boy that I liked. And I think he liked me too, so naturally, in a 9-year old's mind, that must mean that we're boyfriend/girlfriend, right?! I remember him vividly. Even saw him at a high school reunion several years ago. Then we actually wrote a couple letters even after that. But sadly, we have lost touch once again.
Some people may think that it's dangerous to drum up old relationships like that - if you can even call what we had a "relationship"! Joey and I never shared more than a few innocent notes... you know, the "I love you, do you? Circle yes or no. Monday, meet me by the monkey bars, okay?" Sound familiar? I assure you, those were the exact words written on his note. Here it is, almost 30 years later and I still remember it verbatim.
Joey is no threat to my current relationship status. Neither are any of the other boys that I had temporary crushes on. But all of them are special to me in one way or another. They helped form who I am today. They helped teach me what to look for in my future husband. Oh, and believe me, back then I thought I was going to marry every single one of them! I guess that's typical for a little girl, though. I wouldn't know anymore since I'll be dealing with vast amounts of testosterone around here in a couple years. But my oldest is almost 11 and seemingly has no interest in girls what-so-ever... yet. Wonder when that will change. Someday he'll meet a girl who can out-build him in legos. Then the world will simply stop turning, I'm sure.
In any case, it was nice to hear Joey's name again. It's nice to travel back in my mind to where life's problems were more simple. To see it again through my young, innocent eyes. I was very young when I married my husband. And I only knew him for 6 months when we said our vows. But here we are, over 16 years later... and I still have a crush on him.
Sorry, Joey.

The Hungry Day Owl
Sunday, August 3, 1980
Dear Diary, Today [childhood friend] came over to spend the night. But before she came, Mom and I went shopping. When she got here we played a couple games, and made pot holders. We got ready for bed at fifteen till eleven. We went to bed at fiffteen after eleven. We got to sleep about ten till twelve.

Dear Weblog, mornings are the worst time of the day. I know several people will disagree with me, and I secretly wish I would disagree with myself, but I just can't change the way I feel. And in the morning, I feel nuthin' but tired. Come to think of it, in the afternoon I feel nuthin' but tired too. It isn't until around 8:30pm that I have any energy. Hmmmm... that curiously corresponds with the time my kids are in bed.
Yes, I'm a night owl... because that's the only time of day when I can fly by myself. And fly, I do. It's amazing how much I can accomplish when the owlettes aren't making their daily demands. I could easily stay here in my office and work all night. Or I could read. Or work a jigsaw puzzle. Or watch a movie with [husband]. Oh, those things sound so wonderful!! Here it is 10:12am and I've got a list a mile long of things that need to be done... and I'm tired.
Perhaps I should go to bed at 9pm each night in an effort to trick my internal clock into thinking that 6am is really 10pm? If it weren't for the baby, I might just sleep all day and stay up all night.
...That's it! I've figured it out. I'm nocturnal. God mixed up the wires when He made me, that's all. Yup, and that explains why you sometimes see an owl sitting on a post in the middle of the day. I bet in her weblog she complains that she's hungry. Alas, we all have something to complain about, don't we?
So why bother?

Imagination and Fine Motor Skills
I apologize for the lack of blogging. Let's just say that I was watching T.V. and leave it at that. (you all KNOW that ain't true, so I'll leave it to your imaginations)
Now... where were we in this exciting (not) soap opera? Ah yes...
Saturday, August 2, 1980
Dear Diary, When we all woke up, Mom took [distant relatives] to the airport. A few hours after Mom got back, [my childhood friend], [brother's childhood friend], [brother], Mom and I went to the movies and saw Herbie Goes Bannanas. It was Three-thirty when we got back. I watched T.V. then we ate supper. I watched T.V. some more for a long time. Then all of us got ready for bed, and we went to bed!!
Saturday, November 3, 2007
I led such an unexciting life when I was 9. I know we've already established my television watching habits and how they most likely corrupted my mind in some way. But my goodness, wasn't there ANYTHING more exciting than eating supper and getting ready for bed that I could've written about? I mean, I went to see a movie that day and I couldn't even mention whether I LIKED it or not?? Nope. I had to document for all eternity that I watched T.V. Yeah - now THAT's important stuff. I am so grateful that my children are not T.V. watchers.
...but then again, I wonder what my kids would write in their diari... er JOURNALS (alas, boys don't have "diaries") if they chose to write in one?? I think I have an idea - every time I mentioned "I watched T.V.", my kids would substitute it with "I played legos". I guess that's not a bad tradeoff. At least it uses imagination and fine motor skills. As for me? Well, the T.V. pretty much negated the use of imagination. And because there weren't remotes back then (am I really that old??), I didn't use my fine motor skills either.
I like to think I've made up for it in time. Changing diapers... that uses fine motor skills, right? What about chopping vegetables? Folding laundry? Oh, I know -typing on this blasted computer. Now THAT uses fine motor skills! And imagination? Well, I use that a LOT! I imagine a world where people didn't cut you off on the way out of church. I imagine a world where we didn't have to strip before boarding an airplane. Where the crotch in kids' pants actually touched their crotch. I imagine a world where it didn't take us 45 minutes to get to the toy out of the cardboard box. Where kids were grateful to even get that toy. I imagine a world where the elderly were treated with respect and admiration instead of irritation and impatience. Where children understood that living in a house requires working to keep it clean. I imagine a world where people slowed down long enough to enjoy all the beauty that surrounds us.
I imagine a world without complaining... but if that were the case, I suppose they wouldn't let me in. I gotta work on that...

A Place Where Everybody Knows Your Name...
Friday, August 1, 1980
Dear Diary, [Man] and [Woman] came over today. We talkted for a long time. Then we ate dinner. Pop went to work while we went to the Tavern!!! We came home and went to bed. [Man] and [Woman] spent the night with us. We we all very tired!!!! When I read this a long time from now, If I want to know who [Man] and [Woman] are... there my very distant relitives that live in england.
Monday, October 22, 2007
Dear Weblog, wasn't it so considerate of 9 year old me to explain who [Man] and [Woman] are for all of us "old" folk? Truth be told, I barely remember them. I can picture [Woman] in my mind, but not [Man].
Okay, I have some explaining to do... you may be wondering why a 9 year old would be spending the evening at a bar. When I grew up, we lived right next to the neighborhood tavern. It was not a rough place by any means. I remember several times sitting around a table in there while the adults talked and played pool. My dad (aka "Pop") even used to have me run next door to the tavern to buy him a pack of cigarettes... you know, from those old machines where you pull the handle straight out? Ker-chunk. That was the noise it made. I also remember they cost 4 quarters and a dime back then. My dad doesn't smoke anymore (Praise God). So anyway, at this local tavern, it was more like a "Cheers" type environment. Everyone knew who I was... I was [Dad]'s daughter. They all knew my name. No, they didn't shout it when I walked through the door
(as in "Norm" from Cheers for those of you who didn't make the connection), but it was not awkward for me to be there. What WAS awkward, however, is that I actually survived a day without watching that dang-blasted T.V.! (Did you all even notice??!) Eh, so I traded the T.V. for liquor and pool. No worries.
Things were different back then... you can all probably relate. We kids could run loose around the neighborhood until the streetlights came on. We rode in cars without seatbelts. We sat next to smokers in restaurants. We played with toys that weren't covered in warning labels. It didn't take us 45 minutes to get our Christmas presents out of the packaging. ...and I could spend the evening in a tavern with my parents when I was 9 years old.
Ahhhh... childhood memories.

The Pleasures of Clean Teeth
Thursday, July 31, 1980
Dear Diary, I realy did'nt do much today! Alls I did was play with [neighborhood friend], watched TV, and did Moms puzzle [sister] gave her for her birthday. Then we ate supper, got ready for bed, worked some more on Moms puzzle, watched TV, got our snacks, brushed our teeth and went to bed.
Tuesday, October 16, 2007
Dear Weblog, I really didn't do much today! All I did was get my rear out of bed (always the hardest part of my day), pack two lunchboxes, washed a load of laundry, changed a diaper, made a bottle and breakfast for [baby], played with [baby], and folded the load of laundry. Then [baby] got to take a nap while I sent a few e-mails, washed bottles, put in another load of laundry, picked up toys, and I even had time to take a shower. Later I will take [baby] to the allergist for his checkup, run a few errands while I'm out, and squeeze in lunch if we get time. After all of that, I will fold another load of laundry, cook dinner, clean the kitchen, monitor homework, give [baby] a bath, read a story, and kiss three sleepyheads goodnight. After that, I will rejoice at another day completed by doing something exciting (that which can be labeled "exciting subject matter" varies with my mood... all other women reading this will surely relate).
I did not watch any TV, did not play with my neighborhood friends (unless idle chit-chat at the bus stop constitutes play time), and Lord knows I don't have time to sit and do a jigsaw puzzle. But, one highlight in my day truly WAS when I got to brush my teeth this morning. I used my new Sonicare toothbrush for the first time and it was quite a treat! Made me want to seductively lick my teeth like that chick always did in those Pearl Drops commercials. (see? I remember SOMETHING from all that TV watching I did as a kid).

It's All About Me.
Wednesday, July 30, 1980
Dear Diary, sometimes I feel unwanted. I feel like running away. One time I almost did! That was like today. It wasent very fun!
Friday, October 12, 2007
Dear Weblog, okay... so that entry is funny enough the way it is. But what people won't realize is that July 30th happens to be my mother's birthday.
Picture it... little 9 year old me wakes up that fine July morning in 1980. I stretch my arms, let out a big yawn, and hop out of bed ready to be pampered and cared for. I wander into the kitchen expecting to see the usual spread of breakfast goods laid out for me. What? The table is empty. Wait a minute. Where's Mom? That's strange. She's ALWAYS in here ready to make me a nice, hot breakfast. Hmmmm... maybe I'll take a look around and see what's going on. "Mom? Where are you?" Oh. She's still in bed. That's odd. And it's awfully selfish of her. I think it's time she got up and fixed my breakfast.
...(later)... Hmmmm, what's this? It appears to be a present. Wonder if it's for me! Sure! It MUST be! I'm the baby of the family... everyone is supposed to shower me with gifts. But I better wait to open it until everyone is gathered around me. I like it when everyone is looking at me. I'll just leave it here for now.
...(even later)... I'm bored. Where is everyone? "Dad, where's Mom? ...At the MALL?? WithOUT ME???" Well, that's just plain rude. She's supposed to take me everywhere she goes. ESPECIALLY when it's somewhere FUN. What's gotten in to her today? It's like she doesn't love me or something.
...(dinner time)... "Mom? What's for dinner? ...Stuffed bell peppers????" Oh Maaaannnn. I HATE stuffed bell peppers. Mom only makes those cuz SHE likes 'em. It's SO unfair.
...(after dinner)... Oh goody. I'll get to open my present now! I can't wait to give my best surprised look when they hand it to me! ...Oh THANK Y... uh, wait a min... oh. It's not for me? It's for MOM? Well why in the heck is everyone giving HER all the attention today?? It's like I don't even exist. Humpf. Maybe I'll just run away. Yeah. That'll show em'. Heck. They probably won't even know I'm gone.
...(bed time)... Well, it's too dark to run away now. Maybe I'll do it tomorrow. I better write in my diary how yucky this day was. ...and then I think I'll watch some T.V.
...do we ever really grow up?

...(after dinner)...
