Dear Diary, Today [childhood friend] came over to spend the night. But before she came, Mom and I went shopping. When she got here we played a couple games, and made pot holders. We got ready for bed at fifteen till eleven. We went to bed at fiffteen after eleven. We got to sleep about ten till twelve.

Dear Weblog, mornings are the worst time of the day. I know several people will disagree with me, and I secretly wish I would disagree with myself, but I just can't change the way I feel. And in the morning, I feel nuthin' but tired. Come to think of it, in the afternoon I feel nuthin' but tired too. It isn't until around 8:30pm that I have any energy. Hmmmm... that curiously corresponds with the time my kids are in bed.
Yes, I'm a night owl... because that's the only time of day when I can fly by myself. And fly, I do. It's amazing how much I can accomplish when the owlettes aren't making their daily demands. I could easily stay here in my office and work all night. Or I could read. Or work a jigsaw puzzle. Or watch a movie with [husband]. Oh, those things sound so wonderful!! Here it is 10:12am and I've got a list a mile long of things that need to be done... and I'm tired.
Perhaps I should go to bed at 9pm each night in an effort to trick my internal clock into thinking that 6am is really 10pm? If it weren't for the baby, I might just sleep all day and stay up all night.
...That's it! I've figured it out. I'm nocturnal. God mixed up the wires when He made me, that's all. Yup, and that explains why you sometimes see an owl sitting on a post in the middle of the day. I bet in her weblog she complains that she's hungry. Alas, we all have something to complain about, don't we?
So why bother?

Imagination and Fine Motor Skills
I apologize for the lack of blogging. Let's just say that I was watching T.V. and leave it at that. (you all KNOW that ain't true, so I'll leave it to your imaginations)
Now... where were we in this exciting (not) soap opera? Ah yes...
Saturday, August 2, 1980
Dear Diary, When we all woke up, Mom took [distant relatives] to the airport. A few hours after Mom got back, [my childhood friend], [brother's childhood friend], [brother], Mom and I went to the movies and saw Herbie Goes Bannanas. It was Three-thirty when we got back. I watched T.V. then we ate supper. I watched T.V. some more for a long time. Then all of us got ready for bed, and we went to bed!!
Saturday, November 3, 2007
I led such an unexciting life when I was 9. I know we've already established my television watching habits and how they most likely corrupted my mind in some way. But my goodness, wasn't there ANYTHING more exciting than eating supper and getting ready for bed that I could've written about? I mean, I went to see a movie that day and I couldn't even mention whether I LIKED it or not?? Nope. I had to document for all eternity that I watched T.V. Yeah - now THAT's important stuff. I am so grateful that my children are not T.V. watchers.
...but then again, I wonder what my kids would write in their diari... er JOURNALS (alas, boys don't have "diaries") if they chose to write in one?? I think I have an idea - every time I mentioned "I watched T.V.", my kids would substitute it with "I played legos". I guess that's not a bad tradeoff. At least it uses imagination and fine motor skills. As for me? Well, the T.V. pretty much negated the use of imagination. And because there weren't remotes back then (am I really that old??), I didn't use my fine motor skills either.
I like to think I've made up for it in time. Changing diapers... that uses fine motor skills, right? What about chopping vegetables? Folding laundry? Oh, I know -typing on this blasted computer. Now THAT uses fine motor skills! And imagination? Well, I use that a LOT! I imagine a world where people didn't cut you off on the way out of church. I imagine a world where we didn't have to strip before boarding an airplane. Where the crotch in kids' pants actually touched their crotch. I imagine a world where it didn't take us 45 minutes to get to the toy out of the cardboard box. Where kids were grateful to even get that toy. I imagine a world where the elderly were treated with respect and admiration instead of irritation and impatience. Where children understood that living in a house requires working to keep it clean. I imagine a world where people slowed down long enough to enjoy all the beauty that surrounds us.
I imagine a world without complaining... but if that were the case, I suppose they wouldn't let me in. I gotta work on that...

A Place Where Everybody Knows Your Name...
Friday, August 1, 1980
Dear Diary, [Man] and [Woman] came over today. We talkted for a long time. Then we ate dinner. Pop went to work while we went to the Tavern!!! We came home and went to bed. [Man] and [Woman] spent the night with us. We we all very tired!!!! When I read this a long time from now, If I want to know who [Man] and [Woman] are... there my very distant relitives that live in england.
Monday, October 22, 2007
Dear Weblog, wasn't it so considerate of 9 year old me to explain who [Man] and [Woman] are for all of us "old" folk? Truth be told, I barely remember them. I can picture [Woman] in my mind, but not [Man].
Okay, I have some explaining to do... you may be wondering why a 9 year old would be spending the evening at a bar. When I grew up, we lived right next to the neighborhood tavern. It was not a rough place by any means. I remember several times sitting around a table in there while the adults talked and played pool. My dad (aka "Pop") even used to have me run next door to the tavern to buy him a pack of cigarettes... you know, from those old machines where you pull the handle straight out? Ker-chunk. That was the noise it made. I also remember they cost 4 quarters and a dime back then. My dad doesn't smoke anymore (Praise God). So anyway, at this local tavern, it was more like a "Cheers" type environment. Everyone knew who I was... I was [Dad]'s daughter. They all knew my name. No, they didn't shout it when I walked through the door
(as in "Norm" from Cheers for those of you who didn't make the connection), but it was not awkward for me to be there. What WAS awkward, however, is that I actually survived a day without watching that dang-blasted T.V.! (Did you all even notice??!) Eh, so I traded the T.V. for liquor and pool. No worries.
Things were different back then... you can all probably relate. We kids could run loose around the neighborhood until the streetlights came on. We rode in cars without seatbelts. We sat next to smokers in restaurants. We played with toys that weren't covered in warning labels. It didn't take us 45 minutes to get our Christmas presents out of the packaging. ...and I could spend the evening in a tavern with my parents when I was 9 years old.
Ahhhh... childhood memories.

The Pleasures of Clean Teeth
Thursday, July 31, 1980
Dear Diary, I realy did'nt do much today! Alls I did was play with [neighborhood friend], watched TV, and did Moms puzzle [sister] gave her for her birthday. Then we ate supper, got ready for bed, worked some more on Moms puzzle, watched TV, got our snacks, brushed our teeth and went to bed.
Tuesday, October 16, 2007
Dear Weblog, I really didn't do much today! All I did was get my rear out of bed (always the hardest part of my day), pack two lunchboxes, washed a load of laundry, changed a diaper, made a bottle and breakfast for [baby], played with [baby], and folded the load of laundry. Then [baby] got to take a nap while I sent a few e-mails, washed bottles, put in another load of laundry, picked up toys, and I even had time to take a shower. Later I will take [baby] to the allergist for his checkup, run a few errands while I'm out, and squeeze in lunch if we get time. After all of that, I will fold another load of laundry, cook dinner, clean the kitchen, monitor homework, give [baby] a bath, read a story, and kiss three sleepyheads goodnight. After that, I will rejoice at another day completed by doing something exciting (that which can be labeled "exciting subject matter" varies with my mood... all other women reading this will surely relate).
I did not watch any TV, did not play with my neighborhood friends (unless idle chit-chat at the bus stop constitutes play time), and Lord knows I don't have time to sit and do a jigsaw puzzle. But, one highlight in my day truly WAS when I got to brush my teeth this morning. I used my new Sonicare toothbrush for the first time and it was quite a treat! Made me want to seductively lick my teeth like that chick always did in those Pearl Drops commercials. (see? I remember SOMETHING from all that TV watching I did as a kid).

It's All About Me.
Wednesday, July 30, 1980
Dear Diary, sometimes I feel unwanted. I feel like running away. One time I almost did! That was like today. It wasent very fun!
Friday, October 12, 2007
Dear Weblog, okay... so that entry is funny enough the way it is. But what people won't realize is that July 30th happens to be my mother's birthday.
Picture it... little 9 year old me wakes up that fine July morning in 1980. I stretch my arms, let out a big yawn, and hop out of bed ready to be pampered and cared for. I wander into the kitchen expecting to see the usual spread of breakfast goods laid out for me. What? The table is empty. Wait a minute. Where's Mom? That's strange. She's ALWAYS in here ready to make me a nice, hot breakfast. Hmmmm... maybe I'll take a look around and see what's going on. "Mom? Where are you?" Oh. She's still in bed. That's odd. And it's awfully selfish of her. I think it's time she got up and fixed my breakfast.
...(later)... Hmmmm, what's this? It appears to be a present. Wonder if it's for me! Sure! It MUST be! I'm the baby of the family... everyone is supposed to shower me with gifts. But I better wait to open it until everyone is gathered around me. I like it when everyone is looking at me. I'll just leave it here for now.
...(even later)... I'm bored. Where is everyone? "Dad, where's Mom? ...At the MALL?? WithOUT ME???" Well, that's just plain rude. She's supposed to take me everywhere she goes. ESPECIALLY when it's somewhere FUN. What's gotten in to her today? It's like she doesn't love me or something.
...(dinner time)... "Mom? What's for dinner? ...Stuffed bell peppers????" Oh Maaaannnn. I HATE stuffed bell peppers. Mom only makes those cuz SHE likes 'em. It's SO unfair.
...(after dinner)... Oh goody. I'll get to open my present now! I can't wait to give my best surprised look when they hand it to me! ...Oh THANK Y... uh, wait a min... oh. It's not for me? It's for MOM? Well why in the heck is everyone giving HER all the attention today?? It's like I don't even exist. Humpf. Maybe I'll just run away. Yeah. That'll show em'. Heck. They probably won't even know I'm gone.
...(bed time)... Well, it's too dark to run away now. Maybe I'll do it tomorrow. I better write in my diary how yucky this day was. ...and then I think I'll watch some T.V.
...do we ever really grow up?

...I Watched T.V.
Tuesday, July 29, 1980Dear Diary, when I woke up I watched T.V. Then I had breakfast and [different childhood friend] came over. We played games and watched T.V. Then she went home. After that, I ate supper, watched T.V., and went to bed!
Wednesday, October 10, 2007
Dear Weblog, this whole T.V. watching thing is really getting to me now. Do you think perhaps the reason I don't ever turn it on now could possibly have something to do with my out-of-control childhood obsession with it? Maybe my brain has had all it can take of the screen and the mere sight of it now just makes me nauseous? Or could it be possible that someone cast a spell over me that causes my eyes to twitch uncontrollably if ever I watch it? Or maybe my parents secretly took me to a hypnotist to obliterate my T.V. watching desire unless some secret code word is spoken. Yeah, that's it.
I hope they picked a dandy of a code... cuz I don't ever want to waste that much time in my life again.

Childhood Memories
Monday, July 28, 1980
Dear Diary, when I woke up [childhood friend] came over. We played with dogh most of the day! Then went to the Library to see some films. And on our way home we took [friend] home. When we got home I watched T.V., had supper and went to bed!
Sunday, October 7, 2007
Dear Weblog, it took me a few minutes to figure out what it was that my friend and I played with most of the day back then. I am pretty sure I meant "dough". So I'm just missing the "u"... that's not too bad. Heck, I'm sure there's plenty of adults who still struggle with that word, let alone a 9 year old little girl!
I remember this particular friend very fondly. She was my best friend for many years... it's sad that we don't stay in touch any longer. I think I know what state she lives in, at least, but little more than that. Perhaps I'll run into her again at the next high school reunion. She was a neat, neat person, and VERY talented. She was also extremely smart. I remember we always spent time in her basement "making" candles. No, we didn't really make them from scratch, it was more like we took existing candles, melted them down into new candles.
I also remember we spent hours drawing pictures of Hello Kitty and My Melody Bunny. Her pictures were always way better than mine. I also remember she had the most beautiful fingernails. Always natural, of course (not many 9 year olds have fake ones, I guess), but always beautiful. Strange what we remember, huh? Well, she was a terrific friend.
I just got back today from camping with my husband and sons. Was in town from the funeral for less than 24 hours before we hit the road again. The house is a mess and I'm dreading getting it in order. I'm exhausted. I don't even have enough energy to watch T.V. - ha, just kidding. I don't watch T.V. anymore. Guess I got enough of it when I was 9.

Families that Play Together STAY Together
Sunday, July 27, 1980
Dear Diary, we got up early to go home. When we got home, I played outside and watched T.V. Then we ate supper. It was not a very fun day! I almost watched T.V. all day! After supper I watched more T.V. Then I went to bed!
Wednesday, October 3, 2007
Dear Weblog, speaking of returning from funerals, I just returned home from my uncle's funeral in my hometown. What a wonderful time we all had celebrating his life. All of my cousins were there - most of whom I just saw last month, but some of whom I haven't seen in years. I am trying to come up with the right words to describe this collective group and I am at a loss. I am so fortunate to be able to call them more than my friends... they are my family. Then. Now. Forever. We grew up together. We shared holidays together. The memories are endless. The love is genuine. Some families merely exist. Ours thrives. Of my 12 first cousins and all their spouses and all their children (and even some of their children's children!)... our numbers just keep growing. And I know every single one of them. (How many families can claim that?) I simply can't imagine my life without them.
Back in 1997, as we gathered for the last wedding of my generation, someone made a comment about how we probably wouldn't be gathering again until we started attending funerals. That struck a chord with me and I wasn't about to let this family drift apart. I am happy to report that between that wedding and this funeral, we have gathered together FIVE different times - regardless of the geographical distance that has begun to separate us all. You see, this family means so much to me that I initiated a family reunion to be held every other year - the first one was in 1999. I coordinate it every time and will coordinate it until the day I die if it means keeping this family close. We ALL look forward to it so much, and it is my fervent hope that the children will realize the goldmine they have been born into and continue to carry on this tradition.
I should stop. Any words I can come up with only serve to demean my true emotions. It is not something to explain... it is something that can only be experienced.
I sincerely hope that you will strive to know and love your family as I do mine.

With Love from Louey
Saturday, July 26, 1980
Dear Diary, Mom woke up and she got ready then she woke everyone else up! When we were all ready we went to [Aunt]'s. Then everyone went to [Uncle]'s funerul, exept [brother], [cousin], [cousin] and I. [Different uncle] took us to [his mom]'s house. Then [Uncle] took us back later on! We went to [Aunt]'s house for a little while. Then [brother], Mom, [other brother], and I went to [other Aunt]'s house to visit. Then we went back to [first Aunt]'s for a while then we went back to the Motell and went to bed!

Dear Weblog, funerals aren't very fun when you're a kid. Obviously it involves a lot of running around visiting with relatives you may not know very well. I don't know how much I enjoyed it back then, but it's different now. I don't think of funerals as 'fun', but I do enjoy the running around and visiting with everyone - most of whom you haven't seen in a long time. I will get that opportunity over the next few days.
One of my uncles passed away yesterday morning. Our anniversary trip had to be postponed, and tomorrow [husband] and sons will have to fly solo while I fly to my hometown for the funeral. I will enjoy visiting with everyone, although I saw most of them just last month at our family reunion. We all knew we'd be gathering again soon, for this Uncle hasn't been well for quite some time. I have fond memories of growing up with him. He called me "Louey", which is my first thought when I think of him. Sweet memories. Sweet man. I'm sad for his passing, but I rejoice in knowing he is no longer suffering, his wife is no longer burdened with his constant care, and best yet - he is in a better place. I was told his last word was a gentle "Amen". Praise God.
Goodbye for now... love, Louey.

Spelling Lessons!
Friday, July 25, 1980
Dear Diary, we went to swimming lessons and I passed. I'm in inermedeit! Then we came home and got ready to go to [Mom's hometown, spelled wrong] to have the funerul for [Great Uncle]. But [brother] and I only went to the funerul home. [Sister, name spelled wrong] came later. When we got to [Great Aunt, name also spelled wrong]'s we stayed a little while. Then went to some Motell to get ready to go to the funerul home. [Brother], [cousin], [another cousin], and I didn't stay to long! We went to [unknown person?]'s house! Then we went back to [Great Aunt, still spelled wrong]'s house. Then we came back to the Motell and went to bed! It was late and we had a big day, so we were tired!

Dear Weblog, that entry alone made me tired. It's very difficult to spell things wrong intentionally, but I'm trying to maintain the accuracy of this record. And all this coming and going, of which must've been of utmost importance since I felt the need to share it, gets a little tiring to follow. I also seemed to have a fascination with exclamation marks. I think that's another reason I get mentally tired when I read my early writing. If everything warrants excitement, it just wears you out. And what's with spelling my sister's name wrong??
Oh well. I must keep telling myself I was just a kid. I do remember that funeral, though. It was the first one I had ever gone to. I have some memories of that particular Great Uncle, but not many. I knew his wife much better (the one whose name is misspelled), as she passed away not quite two years ago.
As I mentioned earlier, I did take the animals - three of them - to the vet this morning. One dog, two cats, and a baby. Could've added the snake to the mix for a better story, but I don't think they vaccinate snakes. Wasn't a disaster as I feared. Worst part was the 15 minutes I spent hunting for one of the cats when it was time to go. Bring that cat carrier in from the garage and she's GONE! Other problem is that we only have one cat carrier. [Husband] and I tried to put boy kitty in a cardboard box and close it with a bungee cord, but kitty was too sly for us. No bungee cord was gonna hold him in that box. So... two cats in one small carrier, on their way to the vet. They were not a bit happy about any of the circumstances they found themselves in. Girl kitty had to put boy kitty in his place a few times on the way. I threatened them with the proverbial "don't make me stop this car", but it didn't work. (does it ever?) Vet made me borrow one of their carriers for the drive home. I guess he didn't see the potential profits of me having to turn around and bring them back in for nearly killing each other. Seeing as how I paid over $360 for this little excursion anyway, I gladly accepted his offer and had a peaceful ride home.
[Baby] is napping! When he wakes up, we'll have some lunch! Then I'll need to get some laundry done! Then the older boys will be home! I'll nag them to do their homework and chores! Then I will scrounge up something for dinner! And later, we have a Pack Meeting! When we get home, we'll start the bedtime dance! After that, I'm certain I'll be tired! So I'll go to bed! (you tired yet?)
PS: I told you Mom got her money's worth out of those swimming lessons. I may not have been able to spell very well, but I made it to inermedeit, by golly! Next step? Edvanst.

Choices.
September 25, 1981
Dear Diary, I played kickball today on recess and aslo I think I don't have any homework (finally!). Oh! I also signed up for soccer intermurals. I hope we win! Ilene's team won the kickball championship a couple days ago. Spanky is still being fresh!
September 28, 1981
Dear Diary, on recess today I played kickball with the boys. (There were a few girls). And Spanky is still getting fresh and after recess he asked me out. I said "No" fast enough to set a World's Record!! I also found out who the captains of the Soccer teams were. They pick teams Wednesday. I got my new glasses last Saturday morning. Everybody likes them.
September 26, 2007
Dear Weblog, today is my 15th wedding anniversary and I thought it would be neat to see what I was doing on this date before it was my anniversary... but September 25th and 28th were the closest entries I could find. Hmmmm... wonder who Spanky was. And why exactly was he called Spanky?
So, today marks the 15th anniversary of when I began my life as Mrs. [last name]. What a ride it's been! Sometimes easy, sometimes rough... but ALWAYS worth every minute. I am truly blessed. To think I could've been Mrs. Spanky. Eeeek! I definitely made the right choice. Of that, I am sure.
Happy Anniversary, babe... (and I can call you Spanky if you want me to.)

Silly Rabbit... Trix are for Kids
Thursday, July 24, 1980
Dear Diary, again we went to swimming lessons. Came back, washed the car and had lunch. Mom washed the other car and then went to buy Grandpa a hat. Then everyone voted for me with my Trix election kit. Then I watched T.V., Bionic Woman, and one of my favorites, Brady Bunch! Then I had supper, got my bath, watched T.V. and went to bed!
Tuesday, September 25, 2007
Dear Weblog, I am truly embarassed at my apparent childhood T.V. addiction. I wonder if I should stop blaming my poor parents for all my quirks and give credit where credit is due. Wonder Woman. Yup, she's to blame for everything from now on.
This morning Baby didn't want all of his oatmeal for breakfast, so I ate the rest. It's some organic brand, so unless I doctor it up with some cinnamon and brown sugar, it tastes like cardboard. There weren't any fun things to look at on the box, either. Drat. I remember those mornings spent staring at the back of a box of cereal. In fact, I relive it almost every day when my two older boys sit transfixed at the images on the back of their cereal boxes. I wonder if the folks who design those things realize what a truly captive audience they have. I mean, do they really give it much thought when they slap some hidden picture game on there? Wonder how much they get paid. I think I could do that job. How hard can it be?
Speaking of brown sugar, I spent nearly 45 minutes this morning "fixing" mine. Do you notice that the quality of brown sugar has deteriorated significantly over the years? I remember it being so soft and fluffy. Now, a brand new bag yields zillions of molasses rocks. I think the manufacturers are trying to save money and omitted the step where they sift those things out. They probably justify it by claiming they add fiber. I use it every morning (in Baby's cereal, remember?) so I finally said enough is enough. I dug around my cabinets until I found my almost-never-been-used sifter. Then I got a really good upper body workout as I proceeded to sift the entire bag (it was a new bag). Do you know those hinged hand exerciser thingies where you have to squeeze them really hard - do they even make those any more? Well, whatever muscle that thing works out ought to really be hurting me tomorrow cuz I worked it GOOD. But, I have beautiful brown sugar now!! Must be a pretty bleak horizon when the thing you're looking forward to is scooping a spoonful of brown sugar into your oatmeal.
But, alas, I DO have something REALLY exciting to look forward to!! Tomorrow is my 15th wedding anniversary! Hip Hip Hooray! Husband has to work tomorrow night, though. Shucks. But that's okay. Our celebrating will commence this weekend when he is taking me out of town to an undisclosed location! I can't wait! Grammy will be coming to corral the young'uns while I'm off to Husband-knows-where. I'm looking forward to not having an alarm clock on this journey (either the electronic kind or the lung kind)... I'm also looking forward to not having to cook, clean, or do laundry! It'll just be Husband and me... ahhhhhh... pure bliss! Why'd we ever have kids??? Oh yeah... cuz they're just so dang cute.
Baby has added a few words to his vocabulary (if you call "Momma" and "Dada" a vocabulary). He delights us with "Uh-oh" whenever something is dropped. Heck, we go around dropping everything in sight just to hear him utter those two syllables. He must think we're the most clumsiest people on earth. He also says something that resembles the word "cracker". Comes out "Cakaw". And today, when I grabbed a banana, I distinctly heard him say "Nanuh". Yes, I'm a proud Momma. The kid still can't walk. But he knows his food. I suppose we'll have to teach him some form of exercise to make up for the amount of calories he shovels in his mouth each day. Perhaps I'll let him sift the next bag of brown sugar.

Family Meeting
Wednesday, July 23, 1980
Dear Diary, we went to swimming lessons while Mom went to take grandpa home from the hospital. On our way back from swimming lessons, Pop got a haircut. Mom was back before we were. When we got back I watched T.V. for a little bit. Then I went to Mrs. Hoffman's house to rake leaves. I got a dollar and a quarter from it. When I got back I had Piano lessons. When I got back, I watched T.V., had supper, and talked to Pop about problems around the house so we could solve them.

Dear Weblog, I'm only halfway through my day, but Baby is taking a nap, so now is my precious chance to catch up on the computer work for the day. If I try to do it while he's awake, my sentences tend to lzzzlzzxxook like th0012653is. Plus, it gets really bad when he manages to press the mouse button at precisely the right time and I end up initializing the installation of some astrological hocus pocus garbage.
My day (though only half over as previously stated) is going right well. It started off a bit better than [husband's]. He was supposed to be up at 5:30 to leave by 6:00 for a very important meeting. Well, that sneaky alarm clock fairy came and turned his off because it never buzzed. We were both awakened at 6:00 when MINE went off. Nothing like bolting upright from a deep sleep, jumping in a cold shower because you have no time to wait for it to get warm, and shaving, brushing your teeth and combing your hair all at the same time while watching the precious minutes tick by. He was out the door by 6:15. Not bad. I've done it in less... all that plus I dressed a baby, changed a diaper, made a bottle, packed two lunches, and signed homework. You other moms know exactly what I'm talking about. I think there should be an olympic speed event called "Getting Out The Door with Children". Just off the top of my head I think I've got half the team already pegged.
Now, I simply cannot sign off until I comment on a few things I've noticed about my early childhood. First of all, I had no idea how important T.V. watching was to me. I mean REALLY. Could I have written at least ONE sentence without the phrase "and then I watched T.V."?? I am glad to see that I did SOME form of exercise... 'course, I couldn't help but notice that I had to be paid a small fortune to do it. Apparently my day simply wasn't complete until I spent at least a couple hours with Greg and Marcia. I must admit that I think I've seen every episode ever made of those dern Bradys. From big fat noses to black wigs to pork chops & applesauce. Don't judge me. You know exactly what I'm talking about.
Second, a life lesson for any of you who are young enough to still learn one. If you are taking piano lessons, DON'T QUIT. Just trust me on this. If your mom says "You'll regret it one day if you quit"... just take my word that she's RIGHT. Been there... heard that... and quit anyway. Wish I hadn't. Maybe I could play more than the one song that I painstakingly plunked away at and memorized so I wouldn't have to read sheet music anymore. My kids think that's the only song this old piano of ours is CAPABLE of playing. If they ever heard something else, they just might fall out of their chair. Ah, but I will say this: At least I can swim. Mom got her money's worth out of those lessons. (Note: my aforementioned memorized song is "Longer" by Dan Fogelberg. But I think it's gone on long enough.)
Lastly, how old did I say I was in 1980??? NINE? What the heck did I know about family problems and how to solve them? What, was I running the family meeting? Did I call my dad into my room and say, "Look, Pop. There's a few things around here that need to change. I think it's high time we had a little chat. Oh, and by the way. You need a haircut."???
Okay, so maybe I did. Get off my case. Family meetings around here occur on Wednesday nights. Must've worked out well.
And just for the record, April, I currently have about 9 diaries/baby books that I'm trying to keep current. And if you count this new fan-dangled computer version that you all pressured me into, that makes 10. Thanks for helping me stay organized. Heck, I've got a book to write in for every kid you have to keep fed. Guess we're even. You plannin' any more? Cuz I'm thinking I'll need to buy a few more pens.

Just another day in the life...
Tuesday, July 22, 1980
Dear Diary, we went to swimming lessens. We came home and ate lunch and watched T.V. Then I rested while Mom took Sissy to the vet. When she came home she took [brother] to [brother's friend's] house. Then at 3:00 I watched T.V. again until 4:00. Mom went to get [brother]. At 5:00 I watched Brady Bunch. Then we ate supper: Baberqued ham. Then we went to the hospital. There was these two boys who liked me!
Sunday, September 23, 2007
Dear Weblog, I went to church today. First time in weeks. I decided that I will no longer let my late-sleeping and slow-to-get-ready children be my excuse to stay home. Baby and I were up and fed, so we went. Felt really good, too. We came home and ate leftovers for lunch: Pork chops with apples and onions. I should clarify that it was only ME who ate that. I seem to be the only one who can stomach that dish more than once. None of the animals went to the vet, but I will have the pleasure of taking two cats, one dog, and a Baby to the vet on Thursday. Stay tuned for that recap. It should be interesting. I didn't turn the T.V. on all day, but I did listen to my iPod some. Then I wish I would've rested but Baby doesn't usually allow that. Could've really used a nap so my drive to the birthday party wouldn't have been so dangerous. It's hard to drive with your eyes closed. At 4:00 we all attended [good friend's] 40th birthday party. That one margarita I had gave me quite a buzz... it's been a long time. I'm such a lightweight. Then I caught a frog and it peed on me. (I'm not lying, folks... this is a true account of my day and I'm counting on the eye witnesses who were there to please speak up in my defense). Then I washed my hands. At the party, there were lots of good looking guys, but I got to go home with the best looking one. Life is good.

A New Chapter
So here I am. You all know me... NOW. But most of you didn't know me THEN. I've wanted to write a book about my life for the longest time. But who am I kidding? That'll never happen. Then I reallized that I've already written a book about my life! It's all there... beginning with the pages of my childhood diary.

Dear Diary, we went to swimming lessons, and I had fun! Then we came home and had lunch. Then I watched TV. Next [my brother] cut the grass. Then it rained! We went inside and ate supper. Then Mom, [brother], and I went to the hospital to see grandpa. But [brother] and I couldn't! We're to young.
Now some of you may wonder why I chose to commence this history lesson with such an apparently uneventful day from my past. Well, to start with, it is the earliest self-written record I have of my life. It is the first entry in my beloved Holly Hobbie diary. I was only 9 years old. Second, I think it solidifies the fact that no matter what we may think is exciting enough to be recorded for all eternity, will, in fact, prove to be quite boring and useless later on. Okay, and somewhat funny. Hmmmm... kind of gives my kids more credibility when they come to me with the proverbial "Mom, I'm BORED" line. (Heck, wouldn't you be?) From now on, perhaps my reply should be, "Good. Go document it. You'll find it humorous in 30 years."
If I were properly trained, I suppose I could psychoanalyze my childhood words and perhaps glean some indisputable truth about myself. But then, do I really want to know?
